Closing day for 2011

The Pictou County Weekend Market closes today for the 2011 season. It has been a very different summer this season. WE have had some sickness in the Market this summer with some of our vendors. "Where the Heart Goes" hasn't been well since early July. Yesterday Bonnie walked into the Market and we all knew that she "WAS BACK." Awesome Miss Bonnie, good job. The Market would not be the same without you.
We had some new and wonderful vendors and most of them are staying for 2012. Our large consignment booth is being taken over by one of our regular vendors for next season. Myrna and Ivan Walsh have done an awesome job on the consignment area. They have been with the market for a number of years as a vendor (the Dabbling Duo) and now the owners of the consignment booth. They have decided to take a long and well deserved rest. They do a large number of other shows throughout the Maritime Provinces starting in early October. The consignment booth will we taken over and run by Jean Nicol. Jean has been with the market over 2 years and she also thinks it is time for a change. Jean is very excited about her new venture and has a great many new ideas to put into place for the upcoming season.

We already have some surprises up our sleeves for next season . Some vendors are increasing the size of their space and some are moving to different locations. St. Famille Wines had a great season and are also looking forward to next summer. The Salsa man will be back from Ottawa as well. LuLu's sweets are returning along with Gail McNutt, the quilt lady and Laurie and Nonie Gallant ( scroll work). Mostly all your favorite vendors are still with us and at this time we all wish you a great winter and remember we open June 16, 2012 at 10 am. See you at The Market.....

Physical address for the Pictou County Weekend Market

Good Morning everyone. It has been brought to my attention that I have forgotten to put the physical address of the Market on the Blog.

The address is 66 Caladh Ave, Pictou NS We are located almost across the street from "The Ship Hector" Drop by and see what is new in the Market, test some wines and sample some salsa, fine that treasure in our antique booth. For those of you who are coin collectors, be sure to stop by and see our Coin Man Dan, I'm sure you will find something that you have been looking for.

Don't forget to stop by our Chocolate and Sweet table. This is new and Louise does a wonderful job on the chocolates and cup cakes.

We have a scroll saw booth which is doing well and a quilting booth. These are two nice additions to the Market.

You must not forget our long time vendors, Millstream Cottage Crafts, The Plant Man, the Tuckered Duck, This and That Cafe, hand turned wooden pens, jewelry, Lawn Furniture and so much more.

Pictou Lobster Carnival starts Friday July 8/11

We have now been open for 3 weeks. The Carnival is this weekend and the Market is filled to the doors with vendors. We even have one vendor coming from Ottawa. There is a very large variety this season from Wine to Salsa .

Drop by and see Bruce at the Sainte-Famille Wines booth and take your chance for $1.00 to win 2 bottles of wine. There will be samples of the varieties of wine.

Be sure and stop by the First Nations booth and say Hi to Margaret and Willie. Margaret is very busy doing dream catchers on site and you can see how they are made.

We also have a variety of bird houses. Some are made from Oak and some are made from barn boards. Take a look.

Check out Charlie's Crazy Crafts as she has all kinds of hair enhancements for little girls, and some for bigger girls.

Be sure to stop by and see Bonnie at "Where the Heart Goes" Only Bonnie can tell the story of the Heart. You can see where her hearts have traveled to by looking at the globe and the map of the world.

This week we have a new booth coming in for the season. It will have gourmet cup cakes and chocolates along with gourmet cookies. Be sure to check this one out.

We have lots of other vendors but there are too many to mention in this posting. Keep checking and I will update the blog over the summer.

Our town will be very busy over the weekend. So come early and get a parking spot. The parade is one not to miss. It starts at 6:45 and lasts for 1.5 to 2 hours. Awesome parade.

One week into setup of the Market 2011

Boy this has sure been a busy week. New Vendors are getting right into setting up. Some of the new booths are taking form and some of the older ones are back in full force. Today is Saturday, one week from opening. It will be a very busy day today as we have tons of vendors coming in.

One Week from today we Start Setup in the Pictou Weekend Market

Good Morning everyone.

Well, where had the winter gone? It just seems like last week that we were closing the Market for it's 16th season. Now, starting next Sunday, we are going to look like the pictures here with vendors coming and going getting ready for another busy season.
The picture to the left is of Jean Nicol, who is preparing her booth for last season. She is Eyecan Creations. She wrote the book called The Eating Game. Jean has enlarged her booth this year and we are looking forward to seeing how she has it set up this season.

This lady is Beulah Graham. Beulah has been with us for quite a number of years.
Her speciality is knitting. Beulah creates the most wonderful sweaters for children and adults. Her socks and mittens are hardly on the shelf before they are sold.
She is a joy to have with us . As you can see she is a happy lady who loves the Market and can't wait to

get back into the rush of things.

This is Julie Fulton who makes the best bread you ever had.
My Miss Cassidy loves her dog cookies and goes to Julie's booth every morning just to see if there are any crumbs on the floor.
This season Julie will be carrying a full range of baked goods. She will also have Maple Syrup and a number of other items.

Also coming to the Market this season is a winery, A full Quilt booth, A Twist of Iron, Ruff Stuff wooden cottage fruniture, We Make Scents, a new Sign Maker, a Hair Dresser who will do manicures, waxing's etc. a Young lady who does hair clips for little girls and also makes signs for their bedrooms.

She has had lots of walks, cookies and hugs.
If you are in the Market early enough on the days we are open you may see Cassidy.

Closing Weekend

Well folks, another season has come to an end. We close the Market for the season tomorrow, Sunday, Sept 19, 2010, at 5 o'clock.
For the next 2 days there will be specials throughout the Market at various booths.
It has been a great summer with the vendors. Not exactly sure what we will do next weekend when we don't have to go to work.

We already have acquired at least 4 new vendors for next season. Keep watching to see what they are. It is way to early to give away the surprises. As time goes on this winter and I get pictures and writeups on the new vendors I will have them put up on the website.

Last week we had two vendors who got new puppies. What a great place to get puppies socialized. They had a great time playing together.

Well that's all for now, keep watching. Time to get ready to head out to the Market.

Shopping by candle light

Well, hurricane Earl went through in a furry on Saturday Sept 4. Power was out almost all over the County. The main Business district in Pictou had no power. That didn't stop the vendors of the Pictou County Weekend Market from opening. Power was promised by 11 am on Sunday and we decided to open at regular hours. We had a great day. We ran the Market by candle light. The vendors at the three doors had all the sunlight you could wish for. I , myself, am tucked away at the far end of the building and had to have a bunch of candles for light. For those shopping for pickles and Jams they were given a hand held light in order to read the labels.

The customers thought it was a great idea and so did the vendors. We had some music and singing and I even had a dance with the Coin Man. AS it turned out at 5 pm, we still had no power when we closed.

Great Job everyone....

This is our Ship Builder

Bill came to the Market at the end of the season in 2007. He brought with him schooners that he had built. They were a major hit in the model ship world.

Bill was born in Forture Bay, Newfoundland, Canada and was raised on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. Left Cape Breton Island and moved to the wonderful friendly town of Pictou .

He was called after his father who was an engineer and a master model ship builder. He learned his skill of model ship building from the endless hours of watching and listening to his dad. His ships are made in the way his father made them by using hand tools so that he can get the feel of the wood and the proper curves to each model ship that he builds. All his models are made from kiln dried pine which is purchased on Cape Breton Island.

In 1997, Bill started building model ships in a serious manner. Prior to that he had spent time in the army and nine and a half years deep sea dragger fishing. He has a passion for schooners and other ships and will not turn down a challenge to make other models.

His wife, Mary, is his greatest supporter and cuts and hems the sails for every model ship that he builds and even does some of the painting. He can assure you that each and every model he builds is originally hand crafted and built with the love of the sea.

When Bill came to the Market last season he realized that we are right across the street from the " Ship Hector". Before the Market closed for the season, Bill had acquired a set of plans for the Hector and now they are in the Market. They have become a very big attraction.

Bill is also a member of the Maritime Model Ship Builders Guild.

BLUEBERRIES, BLUEBERRIES , EVERYWHERE

This is Rollie and Glenda Lemon who are with us for the next 4 weeks with wonderful Blueberries. These berries come from Triple Creek Farms in Upper Musquodoboit, Nova Scotia. The Farm is owned by Gail and Ross Benison.

Over the years they have had a dairy farm and presently raise beef cattle. They have grown blueberries for a number of years but decided to expand this year to sell clean boxed berries in 5 and 10 pound boxes. They now have their own cleaning shed and have 6 employees cleaning and boxing berries.

They usually sell from the farm but thought they would expand their business by trying some markets this season. This is why then ended up at the Pictou County Weekend Market.

They have had good success on their first weekend and are expecting a great range of sales over the next few weeks.

Glenda and Rollie have fit right into the Market setting . They are delightful to work with.

Earth Essence

They are getting their Tent up for the second day at the Market. sorry I lost the picture, will try to find it again.

It is a new venture for them and for us as well. Their veggies were wonderful. I can attest to that as I had spinach and made a great salad for dinner on Saturday night. And again on Sunday.

They are just getting started and are already talking about next season.

Got so busy inside I didn't get back out for the completed pictures. Drop by and take a look, they are beside the Plant Man.

The Plant man's Lillie's spend Saturday night in the Market. They always look very good on Sunday morning. Guess they like the Market at night.

They are always perky and very fresh on Sunday mornings. Note the wonderful colors.

To have a portrait done of your pet just bring Sandra a photo and she will have your portrait finished the following weekend. She will do portraits with more than one pet too, from one photo or more.

Pictou Weekend Market

Well, I finally joined the world of the Blog. Not exactly sure what to say here but will start with a little history of the Market.

15 years ago we started the market with 25 vendors and ran it as a co-op. Two of those vendors are with us today.

Over the years we have increased our vendors along with our quality of crafts. We have added the Pork Shop and have the "This and That Cafe" with us. Our crafts go from wooden products to book publication. We also have body products, jewelry, an artist on site, fresh breads and pickles and jams. Fine furniture by the Tuckered Duck and pine and spruce furniture by J & B Woodworking. We have the Rock Maple toy Company and Gary Levy who does wonderful tables and kitchen items. Norma Piles' Sauce Company is with us this season and it has been a major hit along with the awesome smells that go through the Market when they are cooking samples. Bill and Mary keeping have replica model ships which Bill makes from the original plans. These are need to be seen to be appreciated. Chair Massage has been an added feature this season and I personally have a standing appointment every Sunday after lunch. Bonnie Cotter is a joy to have in the Market. She makes the heart passes. I will put her website up in a day or so, along with Jean Nicol, who publishes the books of Sandra Mason and they are also with us this season. Jean has also written and published her own book "The Eating Game". This is a great help aid for families with children who have a problem with eating correctly.

We have a very large Antique booth which houses 2 dealers. A very large consignment booth is in the center of the market with a great space to walk back and forth from side to side. Wonderful items there.

AS time goes on, I will put us pages for my vendors. At this time I am just new at this so bear with me. I have probably forgotten some. Yes, Steve the Plant Man, very nice lilies and perennials and Beulah the lady who sits and knits the wonderful sweaters and shawls you see on the wall. And of course, there is Dan the Coin man. Dan has been with us 11 years and each year tells us he is not coming back. The Market wouldn't be the same without him. He is what some vendors call the" Bank." He always has enough change to keep us all going on busy days.

Ian Scott from Truro turns the most wonderful pens, key fobs, cork screws and other small items in a variety of woods. James Gillis is also from the Truro area and he does pewter. Some jewelry but also card stands and Christmas ornaments . We have two full jewelry vendors, Donna who does beads and glass and Betty who designs her own and cuts her own stones . She spends most of the winter in Florida taking courses to improve what she does.

We have 3 people selling body products, Millstream Cottage Crafts , Ellen MacDonald and Vickie MacIsaac.

When we first took over the Market, we removed the fee to get in. This still remains the same today. We are not a Farmer's Market even though we have meat, plants and some organic veggies. WE are a Craft Market, this is what we specialize in.

We are always looking for new and wonderful crafts to have in the Market. It keeps the Market fresh from year to year.
